After any number of decades of rabbit-holing muzik that grabbed me…I’ve been on a trippier vibe the past few years. A much belated discovery of Krautrock/Deutsche Elektronische Musik and Noise.
Opened my eyes to what I only knew as a weird hipster prog myth that never appealed to me. That and Kraftwerk. I had heard of CAN and NEU! (NEU! through Sonic Youth’s Ciccone Youth cassette in the 80s).
Around the same time I also discover Hawkwind…
Kosmische and Hawkwind have been around for decades now. Things I only knew the existence of.
I think that it was Stereolab that perhaps prepped me to appreciate what had come before. I knew enough before Stereolab to love the ground zero of the improv/noise/avant mutant muzik…The Velvet Underground on Sister Ray. The cut on WhiteLight/White Heat is the sonic mix where garage and noise were reduced to mush. But any number of live versions available of The Velvets slugging through Sister Ray or Sweet Sister Ray in Cleveland, Boston, Dallas, San Francisco are unimaginably beautiful.
I don’t think there exists the perfect Sister Ray by The Velvets. It’s not just Lou’s song.
Was White Light/White Heat ever a thing in Sixties Germany?
